Doshas In Kundali — Complete Guide To All Major Doshas

In Vedic astrology, a dosha is a planetary affliction — a placement or combination that creates obstacles, delays or pain in a specific area of life. Doshas are not curses; they are karmic patterns that point to where extra effort, awareness and remedial action are needed. This guide explains every major dosha found in a kundali — how each is formed, what it actually delivers, and the classical remedies prescribed for it.

How to read a dosha

  • A dosha is only active when the involved planets are weak — debilitated, combust, in dushasthana (6/8/12) or aspected by malefics without benefic support.
  • Most doshas have a classical cancellation rule (Bhanga). Always check cancellation before declaring a dosha active.
  • Effects unfold during the dasha and antardasha of the planets that form the dosha — not throughout life.
  • A single dosha rarely defines a chart. Read it alongside the yogas, divisional charts (D-9 Navamsa for marriage, D-7 for children) and the strength of the Lagna lord.
  • Remedies work by strengthening the weak planet and softening the malefic — through mantra, charity, fasting and lifestyle changes. Gemstones must never be worn without expert review.

Marriage Doshas

Mangal Dosha (Manglik Dosha)

Formation: Mars (Mangal) sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house — counted from the Lagna, Moon and Venus. Strongest from the Lagna and 7th house.

Effect: Delays in marriage, friction with the spouse, sudden anger, accidents, or in extreme cases separation. The 7th house is the seat of marriage and the 8th of longevity of the spouse — Mars heating these houses creates conflict and health stress in married life.

Remedies: Marriage with another Manglik partner cancels the dosha. Worship Lord Hanuman and recite Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays. Donate red masoor dal, jaggery and red cloth on Tuesdays. Fast on Tuesdays. Mangal Shanti puja or Kumbh Vivah for severe cases.

Note: Mangal Dosha gets cancelled if Mars is in own sign (Aries, Scorpio), exalted (Capricorn), aspected by Jupiter, or if Saturn/Jupiter occupies the same dosha houses.

Nadi Dosha

Formation: In Ashtakoot Guna Milan (matchmaking), both bride and groom share the same Nadi — Aadi, Madhya or Antya — based on their birth nakshatra.

Effect: Considered the most serious of the 36 guna doshas. Causes problems in childbirth, health issues for offspring, genetic incompatibility and emotional distance in marriage. Carries the highest weight (8 points) in matchmaking.

Remedies: Cancellation (Nadi Dosha Parihar) applies if both have the same Rashi but different nakshatras, or same nakshatra but different padas, or if one nakshatra lord is the same. Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap, Nadi Nivaran Puja, donating gold and cow are classical remedies.

Bhakoot Dosha

Formation: The Moon signs (Rashi) of bride and groom are in 6/8 (Shadashtak), 2/12 (Dwidwadash) or 5/9 placement from each other.

Effect: Financial loss, frequent quarrels, health issues, loss of children or general lack of harmony in married life. Each combination has its own flavour — 6/8 brings conflict, 2/12 brings drain of resources, 5/9 brings child-related issues.

Remedies: Cancelled if the lords of the two Rashis are friends, or if both Moons are in mutual Kendra/Trikona in Navamsa. Worship of family deity, Vishnu Sahasranama and matching by Navamsa chart help.

Gana Dosha

Formation: In matchmaking, the Gana of bride and groom (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa — based on birth nakshatra) is incompatible — typically Deva with Rakshasa.

Effect: Mismatch in temperament, lifestyle and values. Frequent arguments, lack of mental harmony and emotional disconnect.

Remedies: Cancelled if both have the same Rashi lord, or if their nakshatra lords are friends. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, perform Navagraha Shanti and donate to a temple.

Visha Kanya / Visha Yoga

Formation: Birth on a specific combination of tithi, vara (weekday) and nakshatra considered inauspicious — for example, certain combinations of Dwitiya, Saptami or Dwadashi tithi with Shatabhisha, Ashlesha or Krittika nakshatra on certain weekdays.

Effect: Considered unfavourable for marriage of the female native in classical texts — fear of widowhood or marital instability. Modern astrologers read it as a karmic challenge in partnership, not literal misfortune.

Remedies: Visha Kanya Dosha Nivaran Puja before marriage. Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap. Worship of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Kumbh Vivah is recommended in severe cases.

Note: Most modern astrologers treat this dosha with caution — it should never be quoted to frighten a person. Always cross-check with the full chart.

Major Life Doshas

Kaal Sarp Dosha

Formation: All seven planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — are placed between Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes). There are 12 named types: Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhachood, Ghatak, Vishdhar and Sheshnag — based on which house Rahu sits in.

Effect: Repeated obstacles, delayed success, sudden financial setbacks, mental restlessness, marital problems, fear and recurring nightmares. The struggle is highest in early life; achievements often come late but can be very high.

Remedies: Kaal Sarp Shanti Puja at Trimbakeshwar, Kalahasti or Ujjain. Recite Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and Rahu-Ketu beej mantras. Worship Lord Shiva on Mondays. Offer milk to a Shiva linga, donate sesame and feed snakes (offer milk to a snake idol).

Note: Considered partial (Aanshik) if even one planet sits outside the Rahu-Ketu axis. Modern astrologers treat Kaal Sarp as a karmic pattern, not always a curse.

Pitru Dosha

Formation: The Sun is afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn — particularly when Sun-Rahu, Sun-Ketu or Sun-Saturn sit in the 9th house, or the 9th lord is debilitated/combust. Also indicated when the 9th house has a malefic without benefic aspect.

Effect: Ancestral karmic burden. Brings problems in childbirth, repeated misfortune in the family, lack of paternal support, blocks in career and recurring family disputes. The native often feels they cannot move forward despite hard work.

Remedies: Perform Pitru Paksha shraddha and tarpan every year (Ashwin Krishna Paksha). Tripindi Shraddha at Gaya, Trimbakeshwar or Rameshwaram. Donate food and clothes on Amavasya. Plant a peepal tree and offer water to it. Worship pitrus on no-moon days.

Shrapit Dosha

Formation: Saturn and Rahu are conjunct in the same house — considered the strongest curse-yoga in classical astrology.

Effect: Sudden downfall after rise, mental depression, chronic illness, debt, marital issues and a feeling of being cursed. Hard work fails to give expected results because of unseen blockages from past karma.

Remedies: Worship Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman. Recite Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 1.25 lakh times. Donate black sesame and mustard oil on Saturdays. Feed crows and black dogs. Shrapit Dosha Nivaran Puja at Trimbakeshwar.

Guru Chandal Dosha

Formation: Jupiter (Guru) is conjunct or aspected by Rahu or Ketu in the same house.

Effect: Distortion of wisdom and judgement. The native may follow wrong guidance, fall into addictions, lose moral direction or lose respect of teachers and elders. Rahu adds confusion to Jupiter; Ketu makes the native withdraw and doubt all knowledge.

Remedies: Worship Lord Brihaspati on Thursdays. Recite Guru Beej Mantra (Om Gram Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah) 108 times daily. Donate yellow items — turmeric, gram dal, gold, yellow cloth — on Thursdays. Wear a properly tested yellow sapphire only after consultation.

Grahan Dosha

Formation: Sun or Moon is conjunct Rahu or Ketu in the same house. Sun-Rahu/Ketu = Surya Grahan Dosha; Moon-Rahu/Ketu = Chandra Grahan Dosha.

Effect: Surya Grahan: weak self-confidence, conflicts with father, blocks in career and authority issues. Chandra Grahan: emotional instability, anxiety, fear, mother-related issues and recurring mental disturbance.

Remedies: Recite Aditya Hridaya Stotra (for Sun) or Chandra mantra (for Moon). Donate wheat and jaggery on Sundays for Sun, white items and milk on Mondays for Moon. Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap during eclipse periods.

Moon Doshas

Kemadruma Dosha

Formation: No planet (other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu) sits in the 2nd or 12th house from the Moon, and no planet aspects the Moon.

Effect: Loneliness, lack of mental support, poverty in early life, struggles despite efforts, instability of mind and lack of recognition. The Moon — the giver of comfort and emotion — has no friends to support it.

Remedies: Cancelled (Kemadruma Bhanga) if the Moon is in a Kendra from the Lagna, or if benefics aspect the Moon, or if the Moon is in own sign / exalted. Worship Lord Shiva on Mondays. Donate white items — milk, rice, silver, white cloth. Recite Chandra Beej Mantra (Om Som Somaya Namah).

Vish Yoga / Vish Dosha

Formation: Saturn and Moon are conjunct in the same house — considered an inauspicious combination ("poison yoga").

Effect: Mental depression, sadness, emotional coldness, distance from mother, slow career growth and a tendency to overthink. Even success feels joyless.

Remedies: Recite Hanuman Chalisa daily. Worship Shiva on Mondays. Donate black sesame and mustard oil on Saturdays. Fast on Mondays. Wear a Moon-strengthening pearl only after expert consultation.

Note: Reduces in strength if either planet is well-placed (own sign, exalted) or aspected by Jupiter.

Shakat Yoga / Shakat Dosha

Formation: Jupiter is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the Moon.

Effect: Rise and fall in life like a cart wheel — periods of success followed by sudden setbacks. Wealth comes and goes, status fluctuates and stability is hard to maintain.

Remedies: Cancelled if Jupiter is in a Kendra from the Lagna. Worship Lord Vishnu and recite Vishnu Sahasranama on Thursdays. Donate yellow items and feed cows. Strengthen Jupiter through Guru beej mantra.

Mars Doshas

Angarak Dosha

Formation: Mars and Rahu are conjunct in the same house — a fiery, explosive combination.

Effect: Sudden anger, accidents, conflicts with siblings, loss of property, blood-related health issues, surgery, and impulsive decisions that cause regret. Often triggers legal disputes and aggressive behaviour.

Remedies: Worship Lord Hanuman. Recite Hanuman Chalisa and Sundarkand. Donate red masoor dal, copper and red cloth on Tuesdays. Angarak Dosha Nivaran Puja and Mangal Shanti homam.

Chandal Dosha

Formation: Same as Guru Chandal — Jupiter with Rahu (also sometimes called Chandal when Jupiter is severely afflicted by malefics).

Effect: Loss of dignity, ethical confusion, disputes with religious figures, problems in higher education and a tendency to follow misleading paths. Children may suffer if Jupiter rules the 5th.

Remedies: Same as Guru Chandal — Guru Beej Mantra, yellow donations on Thursdays, Brihaspati worship and Vishnu Sahasranama recitation.

Wealth Doshas

Daridra Yoga / Daridra Dosha

Formation: The 11th lord (gains) sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house — or the 2nd lord (wealth) is debilitated, combust or in dushasthana with malefic aspects.

Effect: Persistent shortage of money, debt, cash flow problems, sudden expenses that wipe out savings and difficulty holding on to earnings. The native earns but cannot accumulate.

Remedies: Worship Goddess Lakshmi on Fridays. Recite Sri Suktam and Kanakdhara Stotra. Donate food to the hungry on Fridays. Keep the north and east of the home clean and uncluttered. Strengthen the 2nd and 11th lords through proper mantra and gemstone (only after expert review).

Family Doshas

Putra Dosha (Santan Dosha)

Formation: The 5th house, its lord, or Jupiter (karaka of children) is afflicted — sitting in 6th/8th/12th, conjunct Rahu/Ketu/Saturn, or debilitated and combust.

Effect: Difficulty in conceiving, repeated miscarriage, delayed childbirth, problems in the relationship with children or worry about a child’s health and behaviour.

Remedies: Worship Lord Krishna (Bal Gopal). Recite Santan Gopal Mantra 108 times daily. Perform Putra Prapti Puja and Santan Gopal Homam. Donate to a children’s charity or feed children on full-moon days.

Final word

A dosha in the kundali is not a sentence — it is a signpost. It tells you which area of life carries karmic weight and where conscious effort, sincerity and remedial action will pay back the most. Many great lives carry multiple doshas; what changes their outcome is awareness, dharmic action and timing. Always read a dosha in the context of the whole chart, the running dasha and the divisional charts before acting on it.
