Houses In Astrology — All 12 Houses Discussed In Detail

A kundali is divided into 12 houses (Bhavas). Each house is a specific area of life — body, money, family, home, children, work, marriage, transformation, luck, career, gains and losses. Planets in a house activate that area; the lord of the house carries the karma of that area to wherever it sits. Without understanding the houses, no birth chart can be read accurately. This guide explains all 12 houses — what they rule, the body part they govern, their karaka (significator) and their classification.

House classifications you must know

Kendra (Angular) — Houses 1, 4, 7, 10

The pillars of the chart. Planets here become powerful and shape the visible structure of life — body, home, marriage and career. A planet in a Kendra is said to "stand on its own feet".

Trikona (Trinal) — Houses 1, 5, 9

The houses of dharma and good fortune. Always benefic. Their lords carry purva punya (past-life merit) and any planet placed here gives smooth, lucky results.

Dushasthana (Difficult) — Houses 6, 8, 12

The houses of struggle — disease, sudden events and loss. Malefics often work better here than benefics. Lords of these houses placed in another dushasthana create the powerful Vipreet Raj Yoga.

Upachaya (Growing) — Houses 3, 6, 10, 11

Houses that improve with time and effort. Malefics like Mars and Saturn often deliver excellent results from here as life progresses.

Maraka (Killer) — Houses 2 and 7

Lords of the 2nd and 7th can act as maraka (causing health crises) during their dasha, especially when other longevity factors are weak.

Purushartha — Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha

Houses 1-5-9 = Dharma (purpose). 2-6-10 = Artha (resources). 3-7-11 = Kama (desire). 4-8-12 = Moksha (liberation). Every house feeds one of the four aims of life.

How to read a house

  • Check planets placed in the house — they activate it directly.
  • Check the lord of the house — wherever it sits, it carries that house's affairs.
  • Check planets aspecting the house — benefic aspects help, malefic aspects strain.
  • Check the karaka — Jupiter for children (5th), Venus for spouse (7th), Sun for father (9th), etc.
  • Check the divisional chart for that area — D-9 for marriage, D-10 for career, D-7 for children.

Final word

The 12 houses are the map of human life. Planets are the actors, signs are the costumes, but the houses are the stage on which every event unfolds. Master the houses first — their meaning, body parts, karakas and classification — and the rest of Vedic astrology starts opening up naturally.
